Indonesia steps up blue food expansion to meet 2045 development vision

Indonesia has announced a strengthened push to increase the production of blue foods – nutrient-rich aquatic animals and plants – as part of its long-term strategy to build a healthier and more productive population by 2045. This is reported by
ANTARA.

The Ministry of Marine Affairs and Fisheries said the country is accelerating efforts to develop its fisheries and aquaculture potential, highlighting the importance of fish, shellfish, and seaweed in supporting child growth, especially during the crucial first 1,000 days of life. Officials emphasised that blue foods are a key source of omega-3 fatty acids essential for brain and foetal development.

According to global assessments referenced by the ministry, aquaculture products deliver an edible yield significantly higher than other forms of farmed animal protein, reinforcing their strategic value for long-term food security.

The government stressed that boosting output must go hand-in-hand with raising public awareness of the nutritional benefits of blue foods. National Fish Day, marked annually on 21 November, is being used as a platform to promote greater fish consumption and broaden public engagement with healthier protein sources.

Officials from the Coordinating Ministry for Food noted that blue foods have been formally integrated into national nutrition policies, including programmes focused on strengthening supply chains, reducing food loss and waste, and improving dietary quality across communities.

Representatives from the Coordinating Ministry for Human Development and Culture added that aquatic foods play a central role in tackling undernutrition, overnutrition and micronutrient deficiencies. They underlined that fish provide high-quality animal protein combined with essential micronutrients necessary for cognitive development and the prevention of stunting.
