Indonesia strengthens sustainable tourism through inter-ministerial cooperation

Indonesia’s Ministry of Tourism and the Ministry of Environment have signed a cooperation agreement in Jakarta to enhance environmental management in the tourism sector while unlocking its economic potential. The initiative reflects the growing interest of travellers in sustainable and environmentally responsible tourism, according to

The agreement was signed by Deputy Minister of Tourism for Industry and Investment Rizki Handayani Mustafa and Deputy Minister of Environment for Pollution Control Rasio Ridho Sani. It focuses on improving coordination between government agencies and strengthening the competitiveness of Indonesia’s national tourism industry.

Under the cooperation framework, the two ministries will support tourism businesses in improving environmental performance through a joint task force that develops sustainability guidelines, refines evaluation criteria, and provides technical guidance. Outreach, training, monitoring, and data-sharing initiatives will also be implemented to ensure consistent standards and build a more inclusive and competitive tourism ecosystem.

Rasio noted the Ministry of Environment is committed to advancing eco-friendly tourism and offering continued support to help improve environmental standards across the industry. The cooperation follows a memorandum of understanding and outlines concrete measures to speed up the development of sustainable tourism in Indonesia.
