Iran enters top ten in satellite launches

This milestone marks a leap forward in the nation’s earth observation and remote sensing technologies

Iran has officially joined the ranks of the world’s top ten countries in satellite launches, unveiling a series of advancements in its domestic space capabilities, including the development of earth observation satellites capable of capturing high-resolution imagery at sub-four-metre precision. This is reported by
Pars Today, a partner of TV BRICS.

Hassan Salarieh, Iran’s Deputy Minister of Information and Communications Technology, confirmed that Iran has successfully developed imaging satellites with colour spectrum capability and resolution below four metres. This milestone marks a leap forward in the nation’s earth observation and remote sensing technologies, the source claims.

Iran is also expanding its remote sensing applications. Researchers announced that using data from the “Khayyam” satellite, launched in 2022, three-dimensional models of Mazandaran Province and northern Karaj have been generated.

These models achieve spatial accuracy of approximately 5 to 15 metres. Positioned at an altitude of 500 kilometres, the satellite captures 16-bit images with 156 km² ground coverage per frame, using both panchromatic and multispectral cameras. It also supports stereoscopic imaging, and under optimal conditions, revisit cycles can be shortened from 17 to just four days.

Globally, Iran conducted approximately 20 satellite launches last year, placing it among the top ten countries by volume. One of them (the “Khayyam” satellite) has significantly advanced Iran’s earth observation capability.
