Iran is preparing to connect agricultural production and cropping pattern systems with water resource databases to improve water use and determine consumption volumes for individual farmers, according to the Ministry of Agriculture. This was reported by
Tehran Times, a partner of TV BRICS.
The first stage will involve linking the system of the Ministry of Energy, which contains data on water resources, with the Ministry of Agriculture’s agricultural production zoning system. This will allow information on agricultural operators to be matched with data on holders of water extraction permits.
Further stages will include connecting additional Ministry of Agriculture platforms with relevant Ministry of Energy databases. The broader exchange of information is expected to provide a more comprehensive picture of agricultural production and water consumption.
It is noted that the Ministry of Agriculture already maintains updated data on farmers, cultivation, production and cropping patterns, while the Ministry of Energy holds information on water resources and extraction volumes. Combining the datasets will make it possible to assess agricultural output in relation to the amount of water used by individual operators.
Trial data exchange between the two ministries has already taken place over the past month. Experts highlight the relevant data exchange documents have been prepared, with the shared infrastructure expected to be ready for trial operation once any remaining technical requirements are addressed.
