Iran’s parliament drafts national AI bill to regulate and accelerate development

Iran’s Parliament has introduced a draft National Artificial Intelligence Bill aimed at creating the structures needed for development, legislation and oversight of the fast-growing sector. This is reported by Mehr News Agency, a partner of TV BRICS.

Lawmakers said the initiative reflects recognition of AI’s transformative role globally and seeks to ensure Iran secures a strong position in shaping the technology’s future.

The proposal includes establishing a National AI Organisation directly under the president’s office, with clear authority, independent funding and a mandate to drive infrastructure, research, regulation, and private sector engagement. Support for both AI start-ups and knowledge-based companies is planned, but with separate frameworks to avoid overlap.

Parliament is expected to debate the bill in full before discussions on the 2026 budget, with the aim of embedding AI as a national priority. Officials stressed that AI is not a passing trend but a disruptive technology reshaping science, communications, healthcare, and beyond.
