Kyrgyzstan expands water-saving irrigation to 224,000 hectares | TV BRICS, 18.04.26

Kyrgyzstan plans to expand the use of water-saving technologies in agriculture from 8,000 hectares to 224,000 hectares by 2028. This will raise their share to 13 per cent of all irrigated land, according to Akchabar, a partner of TV BRICS.

The initiative focuses on the large-scale introduction of advanced irrigation methods, including drip and sprinkler systems, which are designed to reduce water losses and improve crop yields. These solutions form the basis for more efficient resource use.

At present, a significant portion of farmland is still irrigated using traditional methods. By 2025, the share of modern technologies stands at around 2 per cent, highlighting the potential for further expansion.

The transformation is being carried out as part of a national water management infrastructure programme running until 2028. It includes canal modernisation, construction and rehabilitation of water reservoirs, and the introduction of advanced water distribution systems.

These measures are expected to enhance agricultural productivity, strengthen food security, and support the long-term sustainable development of the sector.
