Laos expresses desire to join BRICS

Laotian Prime Minister Sonexay Siphandone has expressed his country’s interest in joining BRICS.

“We are interested in becoming a member of BRICS. At present, we are in the process of studying this issue,” he said during the Russia-Laos business dialogue at the Eastern Economic Forum (EEF).

Siphandone emphasised the importance of BRICS for the entire region and noted the association’s successes in economic development.

The Prime Minister is leading the Lao delegation to the EEF. He is expected to deliver a speech at the forum’s plenary session on 5 September.

He also met with Russian President Vladimir Putin.

“First of all, I would like to express my gratitude for inviting me to participate in the tenth Eastern Economic Forum. It is a great honour for me to visit Russia again after almost 38 years,” said Siphandone, as reported by the official
website of the Russian President.

The Russian leader welcomed the Lao Head of Government and stressed that relations between the two countries are developing in all key areas.

In July, Putin held talks with his Laotian counterpart Thongloun Sisoulith, who arrived in Moscow on an official visit. The Russian President noted that trade turnover between the countries grew by 60 per cent in 2024 and by almost 20 per cent from January to May this year.
