Lavrov meets with Wang Yi on the margins of BRICS Ministerial meeting

The two sides discussed the prospects for further development of BRICS

Russian and Chinese Foreign Ministers Sergey Lavrov and Wang Yi held a bilateral meeting on the margins of the BRICS Ministerial Council in Nizhny Novgorod.

The heads of diplomatic missions exchanged views on the current state of affairs and prospects for further development of BRICS. Sergey Lavrov expressed gratitude to China for its support of the BRICS chairmanship.

The Ministers noted that new opportunities for this dialogue format are opening up with the accession to BRICS of new states capable of further strengthening the Association in the international arena. This is reported by the official website of the
Russian Ministry of Foreign Affairs.

Wang Yi emphasised that cooperation in BRICS helps strengthen the country’s interests:

“It is indeed important for us to strengthen coordination in multilateral structures in order to protect our legitimate interests. At the same time, this aims to protect the common interests of developing countries”

A meeting of the BRICS foreign ministers is taking place in Nizhny Novgorod on 10-11 June. Earlier, the Russian Foreign Ministry mentioned that the meeting participants plan to exchange views on topical issues on the global agenda, as well as to discuss topical interaction between the BRICS countries.
