Lula da Silva: Brazil to support Malaysia’s accession to BRICS

Brazil is ready to support Malaysia’s possible accession to BRICS as a full member. This was stated by the President of the Republic, Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva, during a press conference following his visit to Kuala Lumpur, reports

In turn, the Prime Minister of Malaysia, Anwar Ibrahim, expressed his gratitude to the Brazilian leader for supporting the country’s aspiration to join the group, according to the
press service of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Brazil. Malaysia currently holds the status of a BRICS partner state.

During their meeting, Lula da Silva and Anwar Ibrahim agreed to enhance cooperation in trade, investment, the semiconductor industry, energy transition, science, education, and food security. The parties signed seven corresponding cooperation agreements.

The talks also contributed to the expansion of the Malaysian market for Brazilian products and the resumption of Brazilian poultry exports to Malaysia.

Another purpose of Lula da Silva’s visit to Malaysia was to participate in the 47th
Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) Summit and the 20th East Asia Summit (EAS). He was invited to attend the ASEAN high-level meeting for the first time.

After his meeting with ASEAN Secretary-General Kao Kim Hourn, the President of Brazil emphasised that the country seeks to become a full member of the group.
