Lula proclaimed 2024 as the “National Year of Fernando Sabino”

Fernando Sabino is a famous Brazilian writer of the 20th century

Brazilian President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva approved the law that will declare 2024 as the “National Year of Fernando Sabino”. The aim is to celebrate and recognise the author’s significant contribution to Brazilian literature. This is reported by
Brasil247, a partner of TV BRICS.

The initiative was formalised through the publication of Law No. 14,794 in the Official Gazette (DOU). The text emphasises the importance of Fernando Sabino, whose most famous books, “O encontro marcado” and “O grande mentecapto”, have become icons of national literature.

The writer from the state of Minas Gerais was born in October 1923 and died in October 2004. The rapporteur for the bill in the Senate, Rodrigo Pacheco, praised Sabino’s mastery of prose that could reveal the complexity of human relationships.

The new legislation provides for the possibility of issuing a commemorative stamp for the centenary of Fernando Sabino’s birth at the discretion of the competent authority.

The event also recalled Fernando Sabino’s varied hobbies. Apart from his main writing endeavours, Sabino was a talented swimmer and in 1939 he became South American champion in backstroke. He studied law, worked as a journalist and editor, and published some 50 works during his career.
