Day six of the Madlanga Commission of Inquiry will hear testimony on the legislative framework governing the South African Police Service (SAPS).
President Cyril Ramaphosa established the commission to probe allegations of criminality, political interference and corruption in the criminal justice system.
The Commission, which began its work a week ago, has heard testimony from National Police Commissioner General Fannie Masemola and KwaZulu-Natal Police Commissioner Nhlanhla Mkhwanazi.
Both Mkhwanazi and Masemola have linked Police Minister Senzo Mchunu, who is on special leave, to alleged criminal cartel member Vusumuzi “Cat” Matlala, who is believed to have infiltrated law enforcement agencies.
They also testified that Mchunu unlawfully disbanded the KZN Political Killings Task Team (PKTT) despite its recorded accomplishments in solving murder cases at the University of Fort Hare (UFH) and those targeted at traditional leaders in the Eastern Cape.
Furthermore, Mchunu has also been linked to Matlala through telephone records.
Masemola has told the commission that the motive to disband the PKTT became clear following Matlala’s arrest in May 2025.
