Malaysia harnesses AI for precision weather forecasting and enhanced disaster preparedness

Malaysia is leveraging cutting-edge artificial intelligence (AI), satellite imagery, and advanced meteorological radar systems to dramatically enhance its national early weather warning capabilities. This strategic integration is transforming raw meteorological forecasts into actionable insights, pivotal for proactive disaster mitigation.

These technological advancements are crucial in elevating the operational planning of emergency services and significantly improving community readiness. This is reported by
BERNAMA, a partner of TV BRICS.

Mohamed Hisham Mohamed Anip, Director General of the national meteorological body, elaborated on this significant transformation. He stated that the seamless integration of radar and satellite data allows for near real-time tracking of dynamic weather systems, such as evolving storms and torrential downpours.

This data is then meticulously analysed using sophisticated AI methodologies to generate highly accurate short-term forecasts, commonly referred to as “nowcasting”, which provide predictions up to three hours in advance. Mohamed Anip confirmed that this advanced forecasting methodology achieves an impressive accuracy exceeding 90 per cent, a significant improvement over conventional techniques.

He also added that the precision levels for longer-duration forecasts are set to improve further through an ongoing meteorological systems development project, currently in its procurement phase.

He further highlighted that the administration is strategically innovating to develop new intelligent weather prediction systems.
