African National Congress (ANC) Secretary-General Fikile Mbalula has distanced himself from the recently concluded Dr. Ruth Segomotse Mompati Regional Conference in the North West.
An urgent court interdict obtained by two members of branches in the area halted the conference but the provincial ANC filed an appeal and went ahead with the conference.
In his letter to the provincial structures, Mbalula indicates that the conference is recorded as irregular and unsanctioned. Any nominations and elections are therefore suspended. The ANC in the province filed an appeal application but the matter has not been heard yet.
ANC North West spokesperson Tumelo Maruping says there was an interdict which sought to halt the conference from proceeding.
“It was not an interim order as it was suggested on social media. It was final order of the court in terms of interdicting the conference from proceeding. The organisation then took a decision to appeal that interdict and that interdict was granted successfully, hence legally so the conference then went ahead and elected the new leadership.”
