More than 830 businesses in Ethiopia reopen thanks to national initiative

The initiative has boosted employment and reduced dependence on imports

More than 830 industrial enterprises in Ethiopia, which had previously suspended operations for various reasons, have resumed production under the national Made in Ethiopia initiative. This was stated by the Industry State Minister Tarekegn Bululta.

He said the country is taking active measures to increase the contribution of the industrial sector to the economy. There are plans to increase the sector’s share of GDP to 17.2 per cent in the coming years, reports
Fana Media Corporation, a partner of TV BRICS.

Special attention is paid to the development of the food industry, which uses local agricultural raw materials to produce value-added goods. Supplies of cotton for the textile and garment industries have also been stepped up, increasing capacity utilisation from 46 per cent to 61.2 per cent.

According to the Ministry, the rehabilitated factories create about 235,000 jobs annually and contribute to foreign exchange savings through import substitution and increased exports. The authorities continue to provide support to make Ethiopian manufacturers’ products competitive in the global market.
