Portfolio Committee condemns NSFAS delays in payments

Chairperson of the Portfolio Committee on Higher Education and Training Tebogo Letsie says the National Student Financial Aid Scheme (NSFAS) can’t continue to subject students to poverty and unemployment.

Letsie has highlighted the failings of the National Student Financial Aid Scheme.

He says among others, NSFAS failed to resolve delays relating to students’ accommodation payments forcing many destitute students to abandon their studies.

Letsie was speaking during a media briefing,

“NSFAS can’t subject our students to poverty, unemployment and inequality which the government is trying to eradicate. We must say we are extremely worried about the operations at NSFAS because of all these matters falling under that particular department.”

It’s not the only thing. Sometimes, it’s June now and I can tell you, there are matters of appeals that have not been resolved. It doesn’t make sense. So, if you resolve an appeal in July and that student has already gone home because they could not get into accommodation.
