Russia and Belarus commemorate 80th anniversary of Victory in Mumbai

The programme drew local dignitaries, public organisations, and members of the international community

The Russian House in Mumbai and the Consulate General of Belarus jointly held commemorative events to mark the 80th anniversary of Victory in the Great Patriotic War (World War II).

The event began with the opening of the photo exhibition “Chronicler of a Great Feat: Yevgeny Khaldei”, featuring images by the Soviet war photographer. The exhibition honours the visual memory of victory and sacrifice, with Khaldei’s most recognisable image – the Soviet flag hoisted over the Reichstag – at its centre.

Later in the evening, attendees gathered for a special screening of the Soviet anti-war film. The screening was held under the theme “No one is forgotten, nothing is forgotten,” echoing the enduring legacy of collective remembrance shared by Russia and Belarus.

Director of the Russian House in Mumbai, Victor Gorelykh, highlighted the cultural and diplomatic significance of the occasion in an exclusive comment to TV BRICS: “First of all, this event is dedicated to the Russian community in India. This is also the opportunity to present the 80th anniversary of the Great Patriotic War. The event is tremendously significant, revealing the truth about the real facts that took place during the Second World War”.

Furthermore, Victor Gorelykh

“One of my favourite ways of interacting with young people in India is to visit universities and colleges to meet and talk to them. The Russian House in Mumbai dedicates several such meetings and events to the younger generation. Communication with schoolchildren and junior high school children is particularly important because they are not aware of much history and the past. Our task is to educate them as well,” he stated.

The event was also attended by the Consul General of Belarus in Mumbai, Aliaksander Matsukou. He reminded that the 80th anniversary of the Victory is a time for remembrance, reflection, and unity.

According to the Russian House representatives, through photography, film, and dialogue, they not only honour the past but also strengthen ties between Russia, Belarus, and India.
