Russia and China eye AI as key area for partnership

Russia and China are gearing up to turn artificial intelligence (AI) into a cornerstone of their strategic partnership, with officials highlighting the technology’s potential to drive innovation and strengthen economic ties, according to the
official website of the Russian government.

At the World Digital Trade Expo in Hangzhou, Russian Deputy Prime Minister Dmitry Grigorenko met Wang Dongming, Vice Chairman of China’s National People’s Congress Standing Committee, to discuss the future of bilateral partnership. The talks highlighted artificial intelligence as the most promising area for joint work.

Grigorenko emphasised that both Russia and China have developed their own large language models and are training specialists to advance AI integration across public administration and major economic sectors. He said combining efforts with China could create a strong foundation for large-scale projects.

He also noted that Russia is developing AI systematically, building on successful regional practices and coordinating initiatives through the government’s AI Development Centre.

The meeting confirmed mutual interest in deepening cooperation on innovation. The two countries have already set up a joint working group on AI regulation and application, which held its first meeting in Chengdu earlier this month. Both sides see collaboration in artificial intelligence as central to their strategic partnership.
