Russia develops innovative remedy for tooth decay

Researchers at
MISIS University have presented a new solution for dentistry – a thin biodegradable plate that combines preventive and therapeutic effects against caries. The development opens up prospects for the creation of a new generation of dental protection products.

According to the WHO, between 1990 and 2019, the number of cases of caries increased by 640 million, and more than 2 billion people suffer from severe periodontal disease. Traditional remedies do not always work: they do not remain in contact with the enamel for long, do not repair microcracks, and rarely contain antibacterial components.

Scientists at MISIS University have proposed a different approach: a gelatin-based membrane with hydroxyapatite, which strengthens enamel, and a complex of enzymes that destroy plaque. The plate is easily fixed to the teeth, held on the surface and gradually dissolves, releasing active substances.

“The key advantages of the new product will be its biocompatibility, lack of side effects, prolonged action, antibacterial activity, and the possibility of inexpensive large-scale production,” said Ekaterina Chikanova, Associate Professor of the Department of General and Inorganic Chemistry at MISIS University.
