Russia helps Kazakhstan develop production of tracking detectors for international experiments

Specialists from the Institute of Nuclear Physics of Kazakhstan are undergoing training at the Joint Institute for Nuclear Research (JINR) in Russia, taking part in the development and production of gas detectors used in high-energy physics experiments in order to transfer the acquired expertise to Kazakhstan. This was reported to
Kazinform, a TV BRICS partner, by Leading Researcher at the Institute of Nuclear Physics Yerzhan Mukhamedzhanov.

A gas detector (straw tracker) is a thin tube several millimetres in diameter filled with a gas mixture. When a charged particle passes through the tube, an electrical signal is generated, allowing scientists to reconstruct the particle’s trajectory.

“It is fundamentally important for us that the transfer of this advanced detector technology from JINR to Kazakhstan is now taking place,” Yerzhan Mukhamedzhanov emphasised.

Gas detectors are used in the production of ultra-thin components, precision mechanics, gas systems, readout electronics, modelling and software-based signal processing.

A straw tube production line has already been launched in Kazakhstan. In addition, specialists from the country are participating in the development of detector systems for international projects.
