The 23rd edition of the Chennai International Film Festival showcased over 110 films from 51 countries. Organised by the Indo Cine Appreciation Foundation (ICAF), this year’s festival highlighted a mix of contemporary cinema, retrospectives, and world classics.
A special focus this year was on Russian cinema, featuring a retrospective of director Karen Shakhnazarov, celebrating 50 years of his creative career. Shakhnazarov personally attended the festival, engaging in interactive sessions and meeting prominent Tamil filmmakers to exchange experiences and discuss national cinematic traditions.
CIFF 2025 presented a wide array of sections, including Country Focus, Tamil Feature Films Competition, Indian Panorama, and Homage. For the first time in Chennai, classic international films were screened alongside contemporary works, while red carpet screenings of 11 standout films drew packed audiences every day.
The festival’s selection process was rigorous, with a preview committee of veteran filmmakers and enthusiasts reviewing over 400 screeners to curate the finest films from around the world.
The festival also introduced Q&A sessions with filmmakers, providing audiences with insights beyond the screen.
Commenting on this year’s edition, Emanadar Thangaraj, General Secretary of the Indo Cine Appreciation Foundation and Honorary Director of the Chennai International Film Festival, said:
“Chennai International Film Festival is a unique film festival in the sense that it has been continuously organised by a film society for the past 23 years with the support of the Government of Tamil Nadu and all major film bodies. We are proud to present world-class films that have won prestigious international awards every year.”
The Chennai International Film Festival has been held annually in December since 2003 and is one of the most significant cultural events in the cinematic life of India. Experts claimed that the 23rd CIFF reinforced its reputation as a key platform for celebrating global cinema, fostering cultural exchange, and connecting filmmakers with audiences in India.
Earlier, the General Secretary of ICAF, Emanadar Thangaraj, and the CEO of TV BRICS, Janna Tolstikova, signed the agreement on joint activities. The partnership is aimed at popularising national achievements of cinematography and creating and implementing new information projects.
