Russian classics to be played on Zimbabwe’s national radio for first time

Residents of the African country will hear works by composers of the early 20th century

With the assistance of TV BRICS and “Orpheus” radio station, residents of the Republic of Zimbabwe will get acquainted with Russian classical music. Classic 263 Radio (92.8 FM, Harare) of the national broadcaster ZBC broadcasts “Reviving the legacy of Russian composers” series. Anton Arensky’s opera “Raphael” will open the season of works by authors from the first half of the 20th century, which will be performed on Sundays in the popular “All About Classics” programme.

“In the ‘All About Classics’ programme, which brings together music by world composers, we are presenting works by Russian authors for the first time. Classical music lovers in Zimbabwe are in for a real treat!” assured programme host Fungai Masango-Willard.

The population of Zimbabwe will later be able to familiarise themselves with the works of Georgy Katuar, Aleksey Zhivotov, Nikolay Golovanov, Vladimir Deshevov, Alexander Mosolov, Leonid Polovinkin. Poorly preserved recordings were restored from sheet music and performed by Russian choral ensembles accompanied by the Radio Orpheus Symphony Orchestra. All of them became part of the cycle “Reviving the Heritage of Russian Composers”.

Irina Gerasimova, General and Artistic Director of the “Russian State Music TV and Radio Centre”, recalled the universality of the language of music.

“I am sure that the works created by famous Russian composers of the early 20th century will not leave foreign listeners indifferent. Familiarisation with our musical heritage will further strengthen cultural ties between Russia and Zimbabwe,” she believes.

TV BRICS International Project Manager Yulia Nazarkina noted that the media network has been successfully cooperating with the Zimbabwe National Broadcasting Corporation for several years. ZBC TV broadcasts TV BRICS programmes and the ZBC News portal publishes news produced by the media network.

Last year, TV BRICS organised the broadcasting of Orpheus music programmes on the Brazilian radio stations Toda Palavra and Rádio Cultura Brasil.

TV BRICS media network was founded in 2017 on the initiative of Russian President Vladimir Putin, which was supported by the heads of state at the IX BRICS Summit in China.
