Russian Deputy Prime Minister Novak: Russia ready to facilitate expansion of ties between EAEU and Iran

The Russian and Iranian sides also confirmed their readiness to work on the creation of onshore gas corridors

Russian Deputy Prime Minister Aleksander Novak held a working meeting with Iranian Oil Minister Mohsen Paknejad. The talks were held ahead of the 18th meeting of the permanent Russian-Iranian commission on trade and economic cooperation, according to a statement by the official website of the Russian Government.

Novak stressed that Russia is ready to assist the expansion of ties between Iran and the Eurasian Economic Union (EAEU) in the field of trade and economy. In addition, the two sides confirmed their intention to continue cooperation on creating new onshore gas routes from Russia to the Islamic republic.

“Iran is Russia’s only partner outside the CIS states, which has a high status in three international organisations at once. The country is a full member of the Shanghai Cooperation Organisation (SCO), BRICS, and also has observer status with the Eurasian Economic Union”

The Deputy Prime Minister recalled that in January a landmark event took place in Russian-Iranian relations: the presidents signed the Comprehensive Strategic Partnership Treaty. He noted that this document includes the main provisions defining the vector of further cooperation between the states in the fuel and energy sector.

In addition, Novak and Paknejad drew attention to the successful cooperation within the OPEC+ framework and on the platform of the Gas Exporting Countries Forum. The Iranian minister expressed confidence that Russia will continue to play an important stabilising role in achieving balance in the global energy markets.
