Scientists at the Moscow Automobile and Road State Technical University (MADI) have proposed a method that makes driving on concrete surfaces in tunnels safer. This was reported on the website of the Russian Ministry of Education and Science.
The researchers found that at low temperatures, a thin layer of ice can form on the surface of the concrete. This reduces tyre grip and increases the risk of accidents.
To reduce the risk of icing and improve road safety, the scientists have proposed three solutions. The first is diamond grinding of the concrete surface, which makes it rougher and improves tyre grip. The second is the installation of heating systems at tunnel entrances, where it is particularly important to prevent ice from forming. The third is the use of specialised equipment to maintain a positive temperature on the road surface during the winter months.
According to the authors, the method can be adapted for use in tunnels throughout Russia.
