Software predicting the structure of the human genome is developed in the Russian Federation

The developed software is a unique solution with a wide range of functional capabilities

Specialists of the Centre for Artificial Intelligence of the National Research University Higher School of Economics (HSE University) have developed software that allows predicting the location of human genome elements, said Maria Poptsova, head of the centre’s bioinformatics project.

“This development will help genetic laboratories to expand the possibilities of interpreting the results of personal diagnostics, and it will also be useful for pharmaceutical companies when searching for targets in drug development,” said Poptsova.

The new software is a unique solution with a wide range of functionalities. When creating it, the rapidly developing field of deep learning architectures and the processing of large volumes of omics data were taken into account, added the expert.

According to Poptsova, the latter represent an aggregate of information about various molecular components of the organism – genes, proteins, metabolites.

The process looks as follows: the user of the system uploads such data to the server, selects processing parameters, after which the programme creates an artificial intelligence (AI) model and begins the process of its training.

As output, it receives data on the probability of element presence in the selected position, statistical analysis of genomic characteristics, and annotation of sites for the studied genome.

The study was conducted in accordance with the objectives of the federal project “Artificial Intelligence” of the national programme “Digital Economy”, under which six AI research centres have been established in Russia, as reported by Prensa Latina, a partner of TV BRICS.
