South Africa launches revised rhino conservation plan to protect black and white rhinos | TV BRICS, 16.04.26

The South African government has released a revised Biodiversity Management Plan (BMP) for the conservation of black and white rhinos. Announced by Forestry, Fisheries and the Environment Minister Willie Aucamp, the updated plan sets out a comprehensive strategy to strengthen rhino protection nationwide and enhance cooperation with other range states.

The revised BMP consolidates earlier policy instruments – the Black Rhinoceros Biodiversity Management Plan (2013) and the White Rhinoceros Biodiversity Management Plan (2015) – into a single, integrated framework. This unified approach is designed to streamline conservation initiatives, improve coordination and enhance the effectiveness of measures aimed at stabilising and increasing rhino populations, reports the official website of the South African government.

According to the minister, the plan promotes a “whole-of-society” approach, recognising that successful conservation depends on collaboration among government authorities, conservation agencies, private landowners, local communities and other stakeholders. Such cooperation is considered essential not only for the protection of rhinos but also for supporting sustainable socio-economic benefits linked to biodiversity conservation.

The revised strategy underscores South Africa’s continued commitment to biodiversity protection and its leadership in global rhino conservation. By integrating policy, improving governance and fostering partnerships, the plan aims to ensure the long-term survival and resilience of both black and white rhino populations while contributing to broader environmental sustainability goals.
