South Africa makes progress in restoring passenger train services in the country

Almost 80 per cent of passenger rail corridors have been restored

According to the Passenger Rail Agency of South Africa (PRASA) CEO Hisham Emeran, 31 of the 40 national railway corridors are now operational.

Speaking at the Africa Rail 2024 conference in Sandton, north of Johannesburg, Emeran said PRASA has rehabilitated almost 80 per cent of passenger rail corridors.

We are not yet at the level we need to be, he added, but we are seeing significant progress. This is reported by
Prensa Latina, a partner of TV BRICS.

A year ago, he recalled, we had 15 million passengers, and by the end of March 2024, we will have reached 40 million. That is almost 200 per cent growth.

Over the past two years, he said, more than R30 billion (about $1.6 billion) has been invested in the national economy in projects, rolling stock production and other organisational elements of the rail sector.
