South African City of Tshwane plants trees as part of G20 legacy project

The campaign aims to promote urban greening

The City of Tshwane has launched a tree-planting initiative in Mamelodi East as part of its contribution to the G20 legacy project. This is reported by
IOL.

Tshwane Mayor Nasiphi Moya said the initiative forms part of the city’s broader commitment to inclusive legacy projects. “This is part of our G20 commitment. We hosted the Shepherd meeting earlier in June, and part of that was for legacy projects, […] the residents of Tshwane would feel that they were part of that milestone that we have achieved as the city in co-hosting the G20,” she said.

Municipal officials, community leaders, and residents worked together to plant 28 trees in Mandela Park and at a local preschool. The project is part of the city’s goal to plant 300,000 trees by December, contributing to both provincial and national greening targets.

The city also aims to raise public awareness about the benefits of green spaces, particularly in the context of climate change.
