South African city Tshwane pushes for tourism-led growth
The city has been named the safest urban area in the country
The City of Tshwane is actively positioning itself as a key player in South Africa’s tourism sector by leveraging major international platforms such as the C20 and G20 meetings. This was reported by
Independent Online (IOL).
These events are being used to showcase the city’s infrastructure, hospitality, and capability to host global conferences, according to local officials, including Sarah Mabotsa, who have emphasised the importance of tourism in driving economic growth and job creation, noting its US$34 billion contribution to the South African economy in 2024.
Tshwane recently co-hosted the 2025 Urban20 (U20) meetings alongside Johannesburg, attracting stakeholders from across Africa and beyond under the theme “Harnessing Tourism for Inclusive and Sustainable Cities.” At the same time, township tourism initiatives, such as the work by the Friends of Toloane in the Toloane Nature Reserve, are being promoted as key components of inclusive economic development.
Safety, a major consideration for tourists, was also addressed during the U20 meetings. Tshwane has been named the safest city in South Africa, and recent crime statistics show continued reductions across nearly all categories.
This recognition bolsters the city’s image as a secure and attractive destination for both domestic and international travellers.
