Sri Lanka’s Foreign Minister Ali Sabry has confirmed the country’s plans to join BRICS. He said this in an interview with
ANI, a partner of TV BRICS.
“We will look forward to BRICS. The first country we would be talking to is India and seek India’s support for us to reach the group,” he said. The diplomat clarified that the government has formed a sub-committee to look into the issue of joining the group.
Sabri added that he has received an invitation to attend the BRICS foreign ministers’ meeting in Russia. He expressed hope that at the event, the Sri Lankan side would be able to assess the possibilities of co-operation through the association.
Earlier, the island nation’s intention to join BRICS was announced by the country’s ambassador to Russia, Janitha Abeywickrema Liyanage.
