Thailand and Malaysia to launch cross-border tourist train

Thailand’s railways authority has completed a cross-border trial run of its upcoming international tourist train in collaboration with Malaysia’s national railway operator.

The test, carried out between Padang Besar and Surat Thani, marked a major step towards enhancing tourism and strengthening economic, cultural, and social ties between the two nations, reports
BERNAMA, a partner of TV BRICS.

According to Thailand’s railways authority, the technical trial was conducted smoothly, with assessments covering key safety parameters such as platform clearance, wheel spacing, coach height, and braking systems.

The two rail operators agreed on a framework to begin regular passenger services by December 2025. Further testing is planned for the Bangkok–Butterworth route, where it is expected to deploy a three-car test train.

Officials noted that extending the cross-border service to Surat Thani will offer travellers a new and distinctive journey experience while boosting regional mobility, trade, and tourism.
