The Institute of Film and Television hosted a master class Visual Journalism for Latin American Media

Visual journalism is a new form of information transmission that combines journalism and graphic design

On Thursday, 16 November, GITR Film and Television School held a master class “Visual Journalism in Latin American media” as part of the youth festival “Telemania”.

TV BRICS International Media Network is a partner of the master class.

The speakers were Cuban professors from the Higher School of Design (Instituto Superior de Diseño) Emilio Cruanas Perez, a specialist in visual communication design, and Hurley Ferras Almaguer, a specialist in industrial design.

“There has been a positive response from the students. As far as I can tell, all the information we wanted to convey was well received. I especially liked the interaction at the end of the masterclass, it was very active. One of the goals of this meeting was to get to know the vision of Russian students in order to bring it to students in Cuba, and it succeeded. It was a useful experience,” said Emilio Cruanias.

In turn, Hurley Ferras said that visual journalism is a new form of information transmission that combines directly journalism and graphic design.

“It is something that is very relevant now and will continue to evolve. The masterclass went very well, the students asked a lot of questions and were active. We hope that there will be an opportunity to hold events of this format in the future,” he emphasised.

Alexandra Rassadina, vice-rector for youth policy and educational work at GITR Film and Television School, praised the masterclass held by the Cuban specialists.

“It is very important that journalists from Russia share their experience and, on the contrary, journalists from Cuba tell about theirs. This is an interesting format of communication for our university. It is good that the journalists who came to us are also young. They told the most important things about modern trends and technologies. This is very important because we understand where we can grow and how we can cooperate internationally in the future,” she said.

In 2023, both designers took part as speakers at the XI International Design Congress “Forma” in Cuba.
