Tunisia expands solar energy to strengthen sustainable development | TV BRICS, 19.04.26

Tunisia is actively advancing its energy transition, placing a strong emphasis on solar power as a key resource for sustainable development. With over 3,000 hours of sunshine each year, the country is making greater use of its natural potential to modernise the energy sector, as reported by Tunis Afrique Presse, a partner of TV BRICS.

As part of its strategy to 2030, Tunisia aims to reduce energy intensity by 30 per cent, increase the share of renewable energy to 35 per cent of the electricity mix, and cut carbon intensity by 45 per cent. These targets are designed to create a more efficient and environmentally balanced energy system.

According to Imed Landolsi, Director of Wind Energy and Biomass at the National Agency for Energy Management, progress in 2025 marked a significant step forward, with renewable electricity generation continuing to expand. He noted that coordinated efforts among stakeholders will be key to maintaining this momentum.

A practical example of this approach is the launch of a 40 kilovolt-ampere solar power plant, which is expected to cover around 70 per cent of electricity needs and reduce costs by about 50 per cent. In addition, measures to improve energy efficiency have already helped lower electricity consumption by 17 per cent and cut expenses by 30 per cent.

The authorities note that the transition to clean energy includes not only expanding solar capacity but also improving energy efficiency, as well as developing wind and biogas projects. These efforts are expected to strengthen energy security and support sustainable economic development in Tunisia.
