In the United Arab Emirates (UAE), 28 August is celebrated annually as Emirati Women’s Day. On this occasion, the country’s embassy in Moscow hosted a session titled “Women in Diplomacy: Pathways of Inspiration and Global Influence”.
The UAE Ambassador to Russia, Mohamed Ahmad Aljaber, addressed the guests of the event. His speech was read out by the First Secretary of the Emirati diplomatic mission, Sana Alhaj Abdulla Khalifa Al-Mehairbi.
The diplomat stated that empowering women means strengthening society as a whole and is a key part of national progress. He noted that the UAE leadership pays special attention to involving women in political and public life: today, the country ranks seventh in the world and first in the region in the 2024 Gender Equality Index, published by the UN Development Programme.
According to official data, women account for almost half of the UAE Foreign Ministry staff and over 40 per cent of the country’s diplomats. Similar trends are taking place in Russia, where women are actively taking up leadership positions in the field of foreign policy, Aljaber added.
“These figures reflect the shared vision of our countries that women’s engagement is not about formal equality but about real strength that contributes to global development and stability. The broader the representation of women in decision-making bodies, the more the world will be able to address challenges in a balanced and far-sighted manner,” the Ambassador stressed.
The leader of the women’s movement in the UAE is Fatima bint Mubarak, Chair of the General Women’s Union and “Mother of the Emirates”. She has made a significant contribution to the expansion of the economic, social and political rights and opportunities of Emirati women. In a speech at the ceremonial event marking the holiday in Abu Dhabi, Mubarak noted that women are the cornerstone of modern society. This was reported by the
Emirates News Agency (WAM), partner of TV BRICS.
“The UAE leadership has shaped a visionary policy aimed at unlocking women’s potential and talents and strengthening their role as the main driving force of national development,” she said.
Emirati Women’s Day is being celebrated in the country for the 11th time. This year, the celebrations are held under the motto “Hand in Hand”, while the UAE General Women’s Union marks its 50th anniversary.
