UAE to chair United Nations Office for Disaster Risk Reduction Support Group for 2025–2026 term

The Emirates will be the first Arab country to chair the group

The United Nations Office for Disaster Risk Reduction (UNDRR) Support Group approved the appointment of the United Arab Emirates as chair for the period 2025-2026. This is reported by the official
website of the UAE’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs.

From August 2025, this role will be performed by Ambassador Jamal Jama Al Musharakh, Permanent Representative of the UAE to the United Nations and other international organisations in Geneva.

The UAE will take over the leadership of the group from Ethiopia, which held this position in 2024-2025. This is the first time in history that an Arab state has chaired the UNDRR Support Group.

As Ambassador Al Musharakh noted, the country intends to pay special attention to protecting vulnerable populations and countering the risks associated with climate change and natural disasters.

The UNDRR Support Group plays a key role in coordinating the efforts of states to implement the Sendai Framework for Disaster Risk Reduction 2015-2030 and in developing dialogue to enhance global disaster preparedness.
