UNESCO backs Vietnam’s proposal for International Decade on Culture for Sustainable Development

The Executive Board of UNESCO has endorsed Vietnam’s initiative to propose the proclamation of an International Decade on Culture for Sustainable Development for the 2027–2036 period. The decision, made at UNESCO’s 222nd Executive Board session, marks a new step towards integrating culture more deeply into global development strategies. This is reported by
VNA, a partner of TV BRICS.

Presenting the initiative, Ambassador Nguyen Thi Van Anh, Permanent Representative of Vietnam to UNESCO, stressed the importance of recognising culture as a vital force for sustainable growth and a key solution to the world’s shared challenges. Following UNESCO’s procedures, the proposal will next be submitted to the organisation’s General Conference in November, before being considered by the UN General Assembly in 2026.

According to the Executive Board, the initiative reflects Vietnam’s commitment to deepening international cooperation, revitalising national culture, and advancing multilateral and cultural diplomacy. It also highlights the country’s active and responsible engagement as a member of UNESCO’s Executive Board for the 2021–2025 term.
