Uruguayan scientists launch deep-sea expedition in sovereign waters

A Uruguayan-led scientific team will embark on a nearly month-long voyage aboard the Falkor (too), a research vessel operated by ocean specialists, to explore deep-sea environments within Uruguay’s sovereign waters. This was reported by
Diario La R, a partner of TV BRICS.

The upcoming expedition, titled “Uruguay SUB 200: Journey into the Unknown”, will bring together 37 scientists, researchers, and technicians from 18 institutions across six countries, under the leadership of the University of the Republic (Udelar).

Running from 22 August to 21 September 2025, the mission will focus on studying the deep marine ecosystems of the continental margin and abyssal plain, regions that remain largely unexplored.

Udelar Rector Hector Cancela emphasised the expedition’s aim to advance understanding of Uruguay’s deep-sea ecosystems while promoting ocean literacy and environmental awareness.
