Vietnam is advancing a comprehensive transformation of its railway sector, focusing on digitalisation and cleaner energy solutions to improve operational efficiency and reduce greenhouse gas emissions, as reported by

The sector transported about 40 million passengers and more than 5 million tonnes of cargo in 2025, reflecting steady operational performance and gradual improvements in service quality. The industry currently operates 258 locomotives, 128 generators, around 4,000 carriages and approximately 2,600 kilometres of track.
Moreover, the railway operator has introduced a broad range of digital tools, including e-ticketing, digital signatures, chatbot-based customer services, and advanced infrastructure management systems. Additional technologies such as train monitoring solutions, surveillance cameras and Lidar-based warning devices have been deployed to improve safety and operational control.
A “digital railway” model has also been implemented, integrating artificial intelligence, big data and the Internet of Things into management processes. Experts noted that these innovations support more efficient operations, reduce costs and enhance service quality, while an emergency response centre enables real-time coordination at key transport points.
Alongside digitalisation, the sector is progressing towards green operations. Rail transport accounts for around 0.2 per cent of total emissions in the economy and about 3 per cent within the transport sector. By 2030, Vietnam plans to modernise infrastructure further, expand the use of cleaner fuels and increase the sector’s contribution to sustainable and circular economic development.
