Vietnam launches construction of first domestic semiconductor chip plant

Vietnam has officially launched the construction of its first semiconductor chip manufacturing plant, marking a major milestone in the country’s long-term strategy to develop core technologies and strengthen its position in the global digital economy. This is reported by
VNA, a partner of TV BRICS.

Located on a 27-hectare site, the plant is designed to support priority national sectors, including aerospace, telecommunications, the Internet of Things, automotive production, medical equipment and industrial automation. Its launch represents Vietnam’s first concrete step towards establishing a full domestic semiconductor manufacturing base and building a comprehensive national ecosystem for chip production.

Once operational, the semiconductor sector is expected to generate annual revenues exceeding US$25 billion by 2030, while the broader electronics industry is projected to surpass US$225 billion, significantly enhancing national value creation and technological resilience.

Construction of the facility is scheduled to progress rapidly, with trial production targeted before the end of 2027, followed by process optimisation and efficiency improvements through to 2030. The project is positioned as a foundation for future advances in high-end chip technologies and a catalyst for Vietnam’s transition into a knowledge-driven, innovation-led economy.
