Zimbabwe has stepped up efforts to emerge as a global destination for medical tourism under the government’s National Development Strategy, officials confirmed this week. This is reported by
New Ziana, a partner of TV BRICS.
The initiative seeks to position the country’s healthcare sector on the international stage by developing world-class health facilities capable of drawing patients from abroad while supporting economic expansion.
Key elements of the strategy focus on strengthening specialised medical services and making them more affordable and competitive compared with regional and global alternatives. Authorities have emphasised modernising existing hospitals, upgrading medical equipment, and adopting internationally recognised standards of care to ensure that treatment delivered domestically meets global expectations.
Victoria Falls, an established tourism destination, has been earmarked for medical tourism development. Plans are underway to link advanced healthcare services with the city’s hospitality infrastructure, enabling patients and their companions to combine treatment with leisure and recovery in a renowned tourism setting.
Officials note that, beyond economic gains, the drive will also improve access to quality healthcare for Zimbabweans, reducing the need for citizens to travel abroad for specialist medical treatment. This move aligns with broader national ambitions to transform Zimbabwe’s economy through innovation, investment and value-added services across key sectors.
