Zimbabwe intensifies drive to join BRICS amid rising global influence

Zimbabwe has intensified its bid to join the BRICS group, with the government deepening diplomatic engagement with member states to expand international partnerships and boost its global influence.

According to the information published by
The Herald, a partner of TV BRICS, the push comes amid a shift towards a multipolar world, where emerging economies are increasingly forging cooperative groups to strengthen economic and political collaboration.

Professor Amon Murwira, Minister of Foreign Affairs and International Trade of Zimbabwe, confirmed that Harare is actively liaising with BRICS countries to accelerate membership.

He added that President Emmerson Mnangagwa had instructed him to personally oversee the process, engaging his counterparts across BRICS nations.

Analysts note that BRICS is increasingly viewed as a stable platform for cooperation, particularly for smaller and developing nations seeking access to development financing.

Experts emphasised that the group focuses on promoting trade in local currencies and fostering South–South cooperation. The membership provides access to development financing, technology transfer, and infrastructure investment, offering strategic opportunities for economic growth and regional influence.

Political analyst Methuseli Moyo noted that BRICS membership could significantly enhance Zimbabwe’s trade, investment, and diplomatic reach.

“Joining BRICS would entrench Zimbabwe’s trade and business ties with some of the fastest-growing economies in the world on more mutually beneficial terms,” he said.

Zimbabwe formally signalled interest in BRICS and its New Development Bank last year, with several member states publicly supporting its application. Full membership could allow Harare to strengthen strategic ties within the emerging world, the source claimed.
