Forty-five scientists from Saint Petersburg State University have been included in the international list of the world’s top 2 per cent most cited researchers based on indicators covering their entire scientific careers. A year earlier, 40 SPbU specialists were represented in the list, while in 2023–2024 the figure was just over 30. This was reported on the website of the university, a TV BRICS partner.

Those included in the list are specialists in mathematics, computer science, physics, materials science, chemistry, biology, medicine, ecology and economics. Among them are Nikolay Kuznetsov, Vladimir Shabaev, Aleksey Kavokin, Vadim Kukushkin, Raul Gainetdinov and Evgeny Abakumov.

A further 35 university scientists were included in the ranking based on the number of citations received in 2025. The list was compiled using data from an international database.

The ranking takes into account the number of citations of publications, the h-index, co-authorship indicators and other parameters. The methodology provides for two lists – one covering an entire scientific career and another for a single calendar year.

A total of 989 scientists from Russia were included in the list in 2026. Data from around 11 million researchers were analysed in assessing scientific influence.

In 2026, SPbU was also ranked among the leading Russian universities for the quality of specialist training in artificial intelligence and was represented in the Shanghai Ranking’s Global Ranking of Academic Subjects in three disciplines.
