Oman has inaugurated a new advanced technologies laboratory designed to accelerate innovation and research in artificial intelligence, data science and emerging digital fields, reports
Times of Oman, a partner of TV BRICS.
The facility, opened at the University of Technology and Applied Sciences in Sohar, is expected to enhance the country’s capacity to develop future-ready skills and support the digital transformation of key sectors.
According to Hanifa Ahmed Al Qasmi, Assistant Vice Chancellor of the university, the laboratory provides a modern platform for large-scale data analysis, artificial intelligence and blockchain technologies, offering students and researchers a dedicated environment for experimentation and innovation.
The facility is equipped to support advanced research across hybrid cloud systems, virtual reality, blockchain applications and data science. It also features integrated computing systems and interactive technologies aimed at fostering collaborative and practical learning.
Officials say the initiative reflects a broader national strategy to align higher education with the needs of a rapidly evolving digital economy. It is intended to strengthen cooperation between academia and industry while equipping graduates with skills relevant to future labour markets.
The laboratory will be accessible not only to students and academic staff but also to researchers and stakeholders from the industrial sector, enabling wider use of advanced technologies in applied research and development.
Experts note that such initiatives are becoming increasingly important as countries invest in innovation ecosystems to drive sustainable economic growth, technological sovereignty and global competitiveness.
