India becomes fastest-growing major steel producer in 2026

India has reinforced its status as the world’s fastest-growing major steel producer after crude steel output recorded a sharp acceleration in March 2026, reports
ANI, a TV BRICS partner.

According to the latest international steel market assessment, India’s crude steel production increased by 11 per cent year-on-year in March, exceeding February’s growth rate and outperforming most major steel-producing economies.

The figures underline India’s growing importance as a global centre for steel production and consumption at a time when several international markets are facing slowing industrial activity and weaker demand.

Analysts say India’s strong performance is being driven by large-scale infrastructure expansion, rapid urbanisation, manufacturing growth and rising domestic demand. Major investments in transport networks, renewable energy projects, construction and the automotive sector are continuing to support long-term steel consumption across the country.

Experts also note that India remains one of the few major economies combining sustained steel production growth with relatively resilient market fundamentals.

Industry observers believe India’s production momentum could further strengthen its influence in global supply chains and international commodity markets over the coming years.
