Non-governmental organisation, WeThePeopleSA has encouraged South African citizens to know learn about their constitution to reap its benefits.
This year marks the 30th anniversary of the signing of the country’s constitution which was adopted on December 10th 1996.
Although it is celebrated globally for its inclusion of socio-economic rights, some citizens say it does not cater for them.
The organisation’s Operations Officer, Nonhlanhla Mgedesi says, “Many South Africans argue that their constitution doesn’t serve their interests or address their needs, they themselves they have never read or they don’t even possess a copy of it. You can only know and learn about the constitution if you do have a copy. The constitution can only be effective when the citizens are aware of their rights, responsibilities and the mechanisms available to hold the government accountable. So, I would urge all South African to have a copy of the constitution and it is available in all the eleven official languages, and it is free, you do not even have to pay to own a copy of the constitution.”
