Kazakhstan is pursuing a comprehensive approach to building an artificial intelligence-driven economy, with plans covering infrastructure, computing capacity, large language models and practical applications, reports Kazinform, a partner of TV BRICS.
Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Artificial Intelligence and Digital Development Zhaslan Madiyev said the country is focusing on five levels of the AI economy: energy infrastructure, microchips, access to cloud platforms, large language models and applied AI solutions. He noted that the global AI market already has an estimated potential exceeding US$50 trillion.
According to the minister, Kazakhstan aims to develop all five areas as the technology continues to evolve. He said that AI sovereignty does not require the country to develop every technology independently and stressed the importance of international cooperation. Kazakhstan is also working to ensure that locally developed large language models reflect the country’s language, culture and context.
Madiyev said applied AI solutions could deliver significant benefits across the economy and everyday life. He also pointed out the necessity to strengthen skills and expertise to support the development and adoption of AI technologies in Kazakhstan.
According to the experts, Kazakhstan plans to expand AI computing capacity by using its energy resources, telecommunications infrastructure and international digital connections. The country could add 5 GW of energy capacity to support the development of computing infrastructure, while fibre-optic networks and data routes across the Caspian region are being expanded with a target of reducing data transmission latency to 45 milliseconds.
President Kassym-Jomart Tokayev previously said that Kazakhstan’s IT services exports exceeded US$1 billion last year. He also proposed an AI competition for Kazakh and international teams based on industry-specific challenges and called for a risk-based approach to AI regulation.
