Ethiopia is helping to develop geospatial technologies in Africa, which are used for national development planning and data-driven decision-making. This was reported by Prensa Latina, a partner of TV BRICS.
According to Andre Nonguierma, head of the Geographic Information Management Division at the UN Economic Commission for Africa, Ethiopia is developing its national space capabilities, launching satellites and expanding the use of Earth observation technologies. These tools enable the collection of data for public planning, policy formulation and the assessment of development outcomes.
The expert also emphasised the importance of cooperation between African countries. In his view, the pooling of resources and the exchange of information will help to create a unified geospatial data system linked to official statistics.
Issues of regional cooperation are being discussed at the 10th session of the Statistical Commission for Africa, which is taking place from 19 to 23 October 2026 in Addis Ababa. Participants are examining ways to strengthen statistical systems and expand the use of data for the continent’s sustainable development.
