Researchers from nine countries present developments in marine observation in Vietnam

The Ocean Radar Conference in Asia-Pacific (ORCA 2026) was held in Vietnam for the first time. This was reported by Vietnam News Agency (VNA), a partner of TV BRICS.

Around 50 scientists, academics and students from nine countries and territories gathered at the International Centre for Interdisciplinary Science and Education in Gia Lai Province. The ORCA 2026 conference programme featured 24 scientific presentations on the development of ocean radars.

Researchers are discussing how to improve radio signal reception, data processing and the monitoring of ocean currents. Such radars help to detect oil spills, carry out search and rescue operations and issue tsunami warnings. They are also used to study the state of the ocean and assess the potential for generating energy from marine resources.

An international summer school is being held alongside the conference, where students and early-career researchers are learning to process radar data, map currents and analyse the movement of water masses.

The ORCA conference has been held since 2012. Previous meetings took place in China in 2026, Vietnam will host the event for the first time.
