Argentina will not join BRICS on 1 January 2024

Argentine President Javier Milei has officially notified the BRICS members that his country will not join the alliance. This was reported by the TV channel TN.

It is noted that the head of state sent the relevant letters to several leaders of BRICS member countries – Chinese President Xi Jinping, Russian President Vladimir Putin, Brazilian President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva and Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi.

He emphasised that he does not consider Argentina’s participation in the bloc appropriate at this time.

Recall, the South American country received an invitation to join the association at the XV BRICS summit in Johannesburg along with Ethiopia, Egypt, UAE, Saudi Arabia, Iran. The remaining states are expected to become part of the group from 1 January 2024.
