China ranks first place in the world in terms of the number of ships

China has become the world’s largest shipowner in terms of gross tonnage, said the Ministry of Transport

The total displacement of the fleet owned by Chinese shipowners now stands at 249.2 million gross tonnes, ministry officials said at a press conference of the upcoming North Bund Forum in Shanghai, as reported by
Xinhua News Agency, a partner of TV BRICS.

In 2022, China’s port cargo turnover approached 15.7 billion tonnes and container turnover was 296 million 20-foot equivalent units. According to Gao Haiyun, a ministry spokesman, both figures have ranked first in the world for many years.

About 95 per cent of China’s foreign trade is carried out by sea. China has established maritime transport routes with more than 100 countries and regions, covering all states along the Belt and Road, according to the ministry.

The North Bund Forum, scheduled from 22 to 24 September in Shanghai, aims to promote global cooperation in the shipping industry.
