Chinese geologists discover two new minerals

Among them is the one and only mineral with scandium found in China

Two new minerals have been found by Chinese geologists in the world’s largest deposit of rare earth metal ores, which is located in the Bayan Obo deposit in the Inner Mongolia Autonomous Region, the Chinese Academy of Sciences told
Xinhua News Agency, a partner of TV BRICS.

The International Mineralogical Association has authorised the names of minerals that have been discovered: oboniobite and sandio-fluoro-eckermannite.

Scandium and niobium are uncommon elements in chemistry. These element-containing minerals are widely employed in a variety of industries, including materials research, information technology, aerospace, and the manufacture of military hardware.

The Bayan Obo deposit has produced the discovery of eighteen new minerals since 1959. So, the 19th and 20th were oboniobite and Scandio-fluoro-eckermannite.
